Manhole Covers of Carmichael, California

The land on which Carmichael occurs was formerly part of Rancho Del Paseo, granted by the Mexican government in the mid-1800s.   It is located on the old wagon road to Auburn from Sacramento, which cut diagonally through the original Sacramento County's Central Township when California became a state in September 1850.   Pioneer families established ranches along the new Old Auburn Road in the 1850s, providing way stations for the teamsters using this popular route (the road to Auburn).

Carmichael is a medium-sized unincorportated community located in northern Sacramento County, sandwiched between I-80 and the American River, and between the City of Sacramento and town of Fair Oaks.   It is at an average elevation of 30 to 128 feet above sea level.   Carmichael was founded in the 1860s.   The township did not get a Post Office until 1947.   Carmichael is home to the Jensen Botanical Gardens; otherwise, it is a bedroom community to Sacramento.   Carmichael is an older suburban area, with many neighborhood streets without sidewalks, which is part of its ombiance.   Too bad the natural creeks are not better cared for or protected.

Interstate 80 is the main route passing through Carmichael (northwest side), which generally follows Old Auburn Road/U.S. Highway 40 (historic route to Chicago and New York).   It takes Carmichael working residents, on average, 25 minutes to commute to work.   Carmichael has a population of 49,742 people (2000), consisting of 86.6% White, 7% Hispanic, 2.7% African-American, and 3.6% Asian.   The median family income of Carmichael residents is $59,002 and the per capita income is $26,811.   Government is the primary economy of Sacramento area, of which Carmichael is dependent on.   About 32% of Carmichael residents over 25 years old earned a Bachelor's degree or higher.   Additional information about Carmichael can be found at Carmichael Info and Carmichael Profile web sites.
