Mendocino is small-sized coastal hamlet on the Pacific Coast of northern California (9.5 miles south of Fort Bragg), at an average elevation of 120 feet above mean sea level, occupying 2.27 square miles.   It was originally a steamer port for lumber and fishing, but is now primarily a tourist destination.   Mendocino has a population of 816 (in 2007), consisting of 93.3% Whites, 1.1% Asians, and 2.8% Hispanics. The median household income is $51,301 in 2009, well above the national average, and the per capita income is $32,335.   40.4% of Mendocino residents hold a bachelors degree.

The town of Mendocino came into existance in 1850 as a logging town and called Meiggsville after Henry Meiggs, later changed to Mendocino after Antonio de Mendoza.   It has never been incorporated as a city.

Many movies have been filmed in Mendocino, including: The Russians Are Coming, Thhe Dunwich Horror, Karate Kid III, Dead and Buried, Dying Young, Forever Young, Same Time Next Year, Racing with the Moon, Pontiac Moon, and The Majestic, as well as East of Eden.   The TV series, Murder, She Wrote, was filmed in Mendocino.
