Fresno is a large urban city in Fresno County.   Fresno is located in the San Joaquin Valley, eastern side, at an average elevation of around 300 feet above sea level.   Fresno was a farming town, named for Fresno Creek, which was lined with native Mountain Ash trees (Fraxinus).   Fresno is the Spanish word for "Ash".   Fresno was founded in 1872 as a Central Pacific Railroad station near Anthony Easterby's farm, and became incorporated in 1895, and is the county seat. Fresno was first called Fresno Station.   Fresno currently has a population of 427,652 (2000) and now about 464,727 people (2005), with about 1,002,284 in the Fresno metropolitan area.   Fresno is the 6th largest city in California and the 36th largest in the United States.   Fresno citizens are composed of 50.2% Caucasians, 39.9% Hispanics, 11.2% Asians (mostly Hmong), 8.4% African-Americans, and 1.6% Native American.   The median household income for Fresno residents is $32,236 and the per capita income is $15,010.

Three highways pass through Fresno, State Routes 41, 99, 168, and 180.   SR99 may be redesignated as Interstate 9 after major improvements to portions to meet Interstate designation requirements.   The average commute time for working Fresno residents is 22 minutes, indicating that a large percentage works in or near the city.   The San Joaquin River flows just north of the city and several sloughs and canals taking water from the Kings River pass through Fresno.   Agriculture is one of the major economic engines of Fresno, with raisins being a major crop.   Fresno claims to be the "Raisin Capital of the World", a title also claimed by the neighboring city of Selma.   Additional information about Fresno can be found at Fresno Info and at the Official Fresno site.
