Manhole Covers of Citrus Heights, California

The land on which Citrus Heights occurs was formerly part of Rancho Del San Juan, consisting of approximately 20,000 acres, granted to John Augustus Sutter in 1844 by the Mexican government.   It is located on the old wagon road to Auburn from Sacramento, which cut diagonally through the original Sacramento County's Central Township when California became a state in September 1850.   Pioneer families established ranches along the new Old Auburn Road in the 1850s, providing way stations for the teamsters using this popular route (the road to Auburn).

Citrus Heights is a medium-sized city located in northeastern Sacramento County, on the border with Roseville. It is at an average elevation of 149 feet above sea level.   Citrus Heights was founded in 1862 with the building of a schoolhouse by W.A. Thomas, at Sylvan Corners.   A real estate developer (Trainor & Desmond) bought up large tracks of land and subdivided them into 10-acre plots, and changed the name for marketing purposes to Citrus Heights.   The township did not get a Post Office until 1947. Aerojet General employed over 19,000 people at its peak in the early 1960s.   Citrus Heights was not incorporated until 1 January 1997, after a long battle with the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, becoming only the fifth city in Sacramento County.   Note: to date there are seven incorporated cities in Sacramento County.

Interstate 80 is the main route passing through Citrus Heights, which generally follows Old Auburn Road/U.S. Highway 40 (historic route to Chicago and New York).   Citrus Heights has a population of 87,387 people (2004), consisting of 84.6% White, 10% Hispanic, 2.9% African-American, and 2.9% Asian.   The median family income of Citrus Heights residents is $51,207 and the per capita income is $20,744.   Additional information about Citrus Heights can be found at Citrus Heights Info and Citrus Heights City web sites.
