Manhole Covers of Anacortes, Washington

Anacortes is a small port city with regular ferries to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island, Canada, located on Fidalgo Island at the northern end of Puget Sound.   Anacortes was founded in 1856, and is situated on Fidalgo Bay, on the northeast side, the lee side, of the island.   It was named for Spanish the explorer Lt. Salvador Fidalgo.   In 1877 Amos Bowman established a post office and named it Anacortes from Annie Curtis, his wife's maiden name.   Anacortes currently has a population of about 16,738 people (2007).

Besides ferry service, it has a harbor for lumber, fishing, and other goods, and services for tourist heading to and from the ferry.
